Short film ‘Uit de Put’ delves into Beringen’s mining past

Local residents and former miners speak out

Beringen’s coal mine, founded in 1907, was one of the gold mines that put Limburg on the map. But the last cart surfaced in 1989. After that, the former mining site had to reinvent itself. Thirty years after its closure, be-MINE is alive and kicking: you can see how the past and the future embrace each other. Seven local residents and former miners tell how the close-knit community climbed out of the pit together. Walk up the mine heap with 87-year-old Stinus. Have an espresso with locomotive driver Bruno. Or dive amongst the fish of the TODI diving centre with Jos and Rik.  The warm voice of Matteo Simoni guides you across the boundaries of time and space.
